UTD Women Roll Over SRSU Lady Lobos, 60-25

RICHARDSON, TX (01.31.15) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team held Sul Ross State to just nine points in the second half Saturday afternoon on its way to posting a one-sided 60-25 American Southwest Conference home win over Sul Ross State.

The Comets, (now 16-3, 12-2 ASC) did not allow the Lobos (3-15, 2-11 ASC) a field goal in the final 8:01 and were one point shy of tying a program record for fewest points allowed. The Comets allowed just 24 points to Texas Wesleyan University on Jan. 8, 2002. Saturday's win marked the fifth time in the program's 17-year history that the Comets had held an opponent under 30 points.

The 35-point victory margin was UTD's largest of the season. UTD beat SRSU 102-59 for a 43-point win in 2013.

UTD struggled offensively to start the game, but found rhythm late in the opening half and started the second period by hitting 6-of-7 shots to pull away. The Comets outscored SRSU, 33-9, in the second half, sealing the victory with a 10-1 run after SRSU hit a free throw with :09 left.

Nicolette Erkman led UTD in scoring for the second straight game, putting up 12 points while hitting 6-of-9 shots. Madi Hess had nine points and six boards. The Comets finished the game 19-of-59 (32.2%) from the floor after hitting just 25.8 percent in the first half. UTD hit just 9-of-26 (34.6%) three-pointers, but out-rebounded SRSU, 49-38, and forced 19 turnovers.

Iemah Wallace-Perry and Hess each pulled down six boards for the Comets while Christina Brosnahan and Madison Steele added five apiece.

The Comets actually fell behind, 6-2, in the first five minutes of the game, but took their first lead (7-6) at 11:29 on a Christina Brosnahan jumper. After a couple of lead changes, UTD broke away from a 10-10 tie (9:34) with a 15-3 run that ended with a 25-13 lead after an Emily Price three-pointer at 3:38. SRSU scored just six more points in the final nine minutes and were down 27-16 at the break.

Hess nailed a three to open the second half, and the Comets were off on an offensive run. UTD stretched its lead out to 25 points (47-22) in the first 10 minutes of the period and were still ahead 50-24 when Ashley Ousley hit only the fourth field goal of the half for SRSU at the 8:01 mark. Two Jaylon McClure free throws with 1:11 remaining gave UTD its largest lead at 36 points (60-24).

The win keeps the Comets firmly in control of the No. 2 spot in the ASC standings with a road trip to Abilene to face Hardin-Simmons Monday night.
