Comet Men Open ASC Tourney Saturday In Semifnals Against CTX

RICHARDSON, TX (11.06.15) - After receiving a first-round bye, the UT Dallas men's soccer team will open play in the 2015 American Southwest Conference Men's Soccer Tournament in the semifnals Saturday at 2 p.m. against Concordia Texas in Tyler.

The Comets (14-3-2) earned the No. 2 seed in this weekend's ASC Tournament after posting a 7-1-1 mark in league play. Texas-Tyler, the ASC regular-season champion and tournament host, will play in the first semifinal on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Thursday's Hardin-Simmons/Mary Hardin-Baylor winner. Sunday's ASC title game is set for 1 p.m.

UTD used a nine-game winning streak to climb to the top of the ASC standings and into the top 10 of the NCAA D-III coaches poll but, posted just a 1-2-1 mark over the final four games to slip to second place in the league. The Comets' have relied heavily on their defense in 2015, amassing a school-record tying 12 shutouts and boasting a league-best 0.61 goals against average.

The Comets rolled off four straight wins to open the season, including a season-opening 2-0 win over Texas-Tyler, however a 2-1 loss to Trinity (Sept. 13) and a scoreless draw with Austin College (Sept. 15) gave UTD a 4-1-1 mark through six games. The Comets then posted nine straight victories including the first six in conference play before struggling with Ozarks in a 1-1 draw on Oct. 22. UTD then fell 3-2 at Tyler (Sept. 29) before closing out ASC play with a 7-0 home win over Louisiana College. Resting the majority of their starters, the Comets dropped their regular-season finale, 3-0, to Belhaven.

Sophomore Danny Meyer leads the way offensively for the Comets with 11 goals and 25 points, ranking third in the ASC in both categories. Sophomore Isaac Urcuyo and senior Jordan Rubel are second on the squad with five goals each while sophomore Daaron McFarling and junior J.T. Hawkins both have four goals to their credit. Sophomore Andrew Jenson, junior Sam Konstanty and junior Kevin Whatley each have a team-best four assists.

Junior goalkeeper Joseph Weber boasts a 12-2-2 record this season with a league-leading six shutouts to his credit. Weber leads the ASC with an 0.60 goals against average and has a 79.5 save percentage.

As a team, the Comets rank first in the ASC in goals (45) assists (34) and points (124).

The Comets are making their 15th overall and sixth straight appearance in the ASC Tournament this weekend. UTD is 11-7-4 all-time in the event, winning the conference title in 2004 and 2007.

Head coach Jason Hirsch is in his third season leading the Comets and has a 40-9-11 overall record entering the ASC Tournament.

The 2015 ASC Men's Championship Soccer Tournament is the 18th in league history. The winner of the ASC Championship Tournament is declared the conference champion and earns automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
