RICHARDSON, TX (11.07.15) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team is heading to the championship game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the second straight season and eighth time in program history after a 2-1 win over Concordia Texas Saturday in the semifinals.
The Comets (15-3-2) got goals from
Jordan Rubel and
Danny Meyer and goal keeper
Joseph Weber made six saves as UTD will looking for the thrid ASC title in school history Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tyler.
Rubel opened the scoring in the 38th minute as he drilled a shot from 18 yards out past CTX keeper Nick Martin, giving UTD a 1-0 lead the break. The goal was Rubel's sixth of the season. Meyer doubled the Comets' in the 69th minute with his team-leading 12th tally of the season as teammate
Daaron McFarling went over the top to find him in the box and Meyer beat Martin one-on-one in the box. CTX scored late as Fabian Billings scored from deep in the 86th minute. The Tornados had a late chance to send the game to overtime as a header by Alejandro Labastida was cleared at the line by the UTD defense with 1:20 left in regulation.
The Comets took just eight shots in the match, four on goal, with Meyer taking three shots. CTX (now 12-3-1) took 13 shots, eight on goal, while Martin made two saves.
In other ASC semifinal action, host Texas-Tyler earned a 1-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Comets won the ASC title in 2004 and 2007.
