TYLER, TX (11.08.15) - After 110 scoreless minutes, the UT Dallas men's soccer team outlasted host Texas-Tyler, 6-5, in penalty kicks of its third American Southwest Conference championship in program history and first title in eight seasons.
The Comet (now 15-3-3) earn the ASC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The tournament field will be announced Monday at 12:30 p.m. (Central) at www.ncaa.com.
Junior goalkeeper
Joseph Weber, who was named the ASC Tournament MVP, made the only save of the penalty kick round as he rejected UTT's Samuel Huerta in the sixth round. After sitting at 5-5 after the first five rounds, Comet senior
Roman Rodriguez would convert on the title-clinching penalty kick to open the sixth round, striking a ball past a diving John McGuffin.
The Comets struggled to keep the ball on the UT-Tyler end of the field over the first 45 minutes, taking just three shots before halftime. UTD would out-shoot the Patriots, 10-8, in the second half and 5-4 in the two overtime periods, but could not get the ball in the net.
UTD had a late chance to end the game in regulation when
Isaac Urcuyo found himself open with under a minute left to play, but his game-winning shot sailed high with 31 seconds on the clock. The Comets then seemingly had the potential game-winning goal in the 7th minute of the first OT period as
Danny Meyer's shot hit the goal line, but was cleard by the Patriots. Neither team would collect a shot on goal in the second overtime frame.
Weber ended the game with seven saves as he posted his seventh shutout of the season. The clean sheet was the Comets' 13th of the season, setting a new program record. Meyer led UTD with five shots, four on goal, while
Daaron McFarling took three shots. Meyer, along with
Sam Konstanty and
Jordan Rubel joined Weber on the ASC All-Tournament Team.
The Comets advanced to the ASC's title game for the eight time in program history, also winning the title in 2004 and 2007. UTD will be heading to the NCAA D-III Tournament for the fourth time in program history, adding a trip as an at-large selection last fall.
