SAN ANTONIO, TX (12.01.15) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team scored nearly 20 points below its average over the first three games of the season, but the Comets scored enough to improve to 4-0 with a 71-55 road win over Trinity Tuesday night in non-conference play.
Dapo Ogunfeitmi led four Comets in double digits as he scored a career-high 19 points to become the fourth different UTD player to lead the squad in scoring over the first four games of the season. Ogunfeitmi was 6-for-12 from the field, hitting 5-of-10 three-pointers, and added three rebounds and an assist.
Jon Hatcher and
Caleb Banks each finished with 11 points while
Kyle Coulter had 10 points. Hatcher collected his second-straight "double-double", ending the night with a game-high 13 rebounds. Banks dished out a game-best seven assists.
The Comets jumped out to an early lead, grabbing an 11-2 advantage just two minutes into the contest, and never looked back. UTD led by double figures for the majority of the opening half, extending its lead to as many as 15 points twice before intermission.
Trinity (0-6) used a strong start to the second half to draw within six points, 44-38, with 13:31 left to play after an A.J. Pulliam layup, but would not get any closer. Two possessions later,
Noah Hill gave the Comets back a double-digit lead, 50-28, on a three-pointer as UTD would not lead by less than seven points for the remainder of the game.
UTD finished the night shooting 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, hitting 13-of-30 three-pointers (43.3%), and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free-throw line. The Comets out-rebounded Trinity, 44-35, and forced 14 Tiger turnovers.
For the Tigers, Pulliam finished with a game-high 23 points while Matthew Colliflower came off the bench for 12 points.
The Comets return to action Saturday afternoon as they open American Southwest Conference play at Ozarks. Game time is 3 p.m. in Clarksville, Ark.
