SHERMAN, TX (12.30.15) - The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team hit free throws down the stretch as the Comets picked up their fourth straight victory Wednesday afternoon with a 58-55 win at Austin College in non-conference action.
The Comets (now 7-1) closed out the road game hitting 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to hold off host Austin College (now 6-4) for the second win over the Lady Roos this season. UTD returns home Saturday with an American Southwest Conference crossover game against Howard Payne. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
Leading 43-38 heading into the fourth period, the Comets watched their lead dwindle to just two points, 50-48, with just 3:42 left to play after a three-pointer by AC's Caitlyn Collins. After nearly two minutes of scoreless action, the Comets extended their lead back to four points on a lay up by
McKenzie Petty with just over a minute to play and stretch their lead to 53-48 with 34 seconds left on a free throw by
Zavier Landry.
The Comets held AC scoreless for over three minutes before the Lady Roos clawed within three points, 53-50, an an Olivia Bailey lay up with 26 seconds on the clock. But, two free each from Petty and
Nicolette Erkman gave UTD the cushion it needed hold off its host, despite a buzzer-beater three-pointer by AC's Kali Vittallo.
Landry led the Comets with 12 points eight rebounds, four steals and three assists while
Micaela Gonzalez recorded a "double-double" with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Madison Steele added eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Comets finished the afternoon shooting just 26.0 percent (19-of-73) from the field, making just 3-of-16 three-pointers (18.8%), and shot 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the foul line.
For AC, Collins was the only Lady Roo player to top double figures, finishing with 11 points. The Lady Roos shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field, hitting just 3-of-14 three-pointers (21.4%), and were 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
