LONGVIEW, TX (02.12.15) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team shot better than 70 percent as a team in the opening half en route to a 67-58 road win over LeTourneau Thursday night in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 18-4, 14-3 ASC) cooled off in the second half but still finished the night shooting a season-high 53.8 percent from the field, topping 50 percent as a team for just the fourth time this season.
Ashley Shaw led all scorers with a career-high 19 points while
Amber Brown finished with 15 points and
Nicolette Erkman had 14 points.
Madi Hess sparked UTD with seven rebounds and six assists, bot game highs.
UTD hit 19-of-27 (70.4%) shots over the opening 20 minutes to grab a 47-25 lead over the Lady Jackets at the break. The Comets closed out the first half outscoring LETU, 15-2, over the final 6:22 to grab their 22-point lead heading into the locker room.
The Comets would grab their largest lead of the night on their first possession of the second half as Shaw hit a layup to lift UTD to a 24-point advantage, 49-25, before the Lady Jackets began trimming the UTD lead. However, the Comets would hold on to their double-digit lead until a buzzer-beating three-pointer by LETU's Rebecca Stewart.
For the game, the Comets hit 28-of-52 shots from the field, doing most of their damage inside the three-point line. UTD was just 1-of-5 from long distance, setting season lows for both makes and attempts. The Comets finished 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the free-throw line, hitting 8 -of-8 free shots in the first half. UTD dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Jackets, 43-25.
LeTourneau (now 7-15, 5-12) shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the floor, connecting on 5-of-12 (41.7%) three-pointers, and were 13-of-18 (72.2%) from the foul line.
The Comets, currently second place in the ASC and ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III South Region, will play their final road game of the regular season Saturday afternoon as they visit East Texas Baptist. Game time is 1 p.m. in Marshall.
