RICHARDSON, TX (02.18.15) - The UT Dallas softball scored a combined 33 runs with a combined 29 hits as the Comets cruised to a doubleheader non-conference sweep of St. Joseph (VT) Wednesday night.
UTD (now 4-3) rolled to a 20-0 run rule win in the opener against the Fighting Saints and closed the twin bill with a 13-0 victory, also in five innings.The Comets will return to American Southwest Conference play with a three-game series at Sul Ross State this weekend. UTD and the Lady Lobos will open play with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Friday and play the series finale at noon Saturday in Alpine.
GAME 1 - UTD 20, St. Joseph 0 (5 inn.)The Comets used a 13-run 2nd inning to run away with a 20-0 win over St. Joseph to open Wednesday's doubleheader.
Sara Davison (2-1) gave up just one hit while striking out seven as she earned her second win of the season.
UTD opened the scoring in the 1st as
Avery McHugh delivered a leadoff home run to open the Comets' half of the frame. The Comets added another run in the 1st on a
Taylor Jensen groundout to take a quick 2-0 lead. UTD would then plate 13 runs on 10 hits, two Fighting Saints errors and a pair of wild pitches to extend its lead to 15-0 after two innings. McHugh would add three more RBI in the 2nd with two singles while
Sara Navarro added a two-run single in the inning. Seven different Comets had RBIs in the 2nd frame.
After a scoreless 3rd, UTD added five runs in the 4th to complete the scoring.
Kendall Moore started the scoring in the 5th with an RBI single before the Comets scored their final four runs on three bases-loaded walks and a bases-loaded hit batter.
Davison tossed the first four innings and walked just two as she faced just 14 hitters. Davison retired the first nine batters she faced before giving up a hit and two walks in the 4th.
Megan Aragones pitched a scoreless 5th, striking out three and giving up a hit. McHugh ended the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored while
Jordan Bratcher and Stefanie Polder were each 2-for-3. Eleven Comets collected hits in the victory.
GAME 2 - UTD 13, St. Joseph 0 (5 inn.)Lauren McLeod took a no-hitter in the 5th inning as she pitched the Comets to a 13-0 win in the night cap to complete the sweep of St. Joseph.
McLeod (2-2) struck out nine and hit one St. Joseph batter as she picked up the complete-game shutout. With one out in the 5th, St. Joseph's Sabrina Akrouk reached base on a bloop single to right-center field to give the Fighting Saints only their second base runner of the game. McLeod would end the game with a strikeout as no St. Joseph runner advanced past first base.
The Comets against used the big inning, plating six runs in the 3rd and five runs in the 4th to handle St. Joseph. UTD got an RBI single by
Aly Hudec in the 1st and a solo home run by
Margeaux Petrash in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead. The Comets then scored six runs on just four hits in the 3rd, taking advantage of five walks, and finished the scoring with five runs on six hits, including a
Jonelle Feikis homer, in the 4th.
Hudec was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Petrash was 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. Feikis ended the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
