TUCSON, AZ (02.07.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team was dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran, 11-8 and 9-3, Saturday as the Comets continued play in the Arizona Desert Classic.
The Comets (now 0-3) wrap up play in Arizona Sunday with another game with No. 4 Linfield. UTD dropped a 6-0 decision to the Wildcats Friday to open the season.
GAME 1 - PLU 11, UTD 8Coming off a season-opening loss, the Comets plated five runs in the bottom of the 1st inning against PLU. However, the Lutes answered with three runs in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd to knot the game, 5-5.
Brandon George knocked in the first run of the game with an RBI double, scoring
Jimmy Norris.
Nolan Smith then played
Pierce Fly with a groundout to give UTD a quick 2-0 lead. George later scored on an a PLU error and
Haden Johnson plated Matt McKenzie and
Tim Cole with a two-run single to complete the 1st frame.
UTD regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd with a Cole RBI single, scoring Smith, and added an RBI double by Smith in the fourth, scoring
Brandon Clounch. But, PLU scored two in the 5th and took the lead, 8-7, in the 6th.
The Lutes then scored three runs in the top of the 9th to grab an 11-7 advantage. UTD picked up a run in the bottom of the 9th on a George RBI single, but could not complete the comeback.
Clayton Buckner gave up five earned runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work in a start while
Aaron Bach (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of relief.
GAME 2 - PLU 9, UTD 3The Comets again opened the scoring in the top of the 1st with an RBI groundout by George, but quickly fell behind 4-0 to Pacific Lutheran by the end of the 2nd frame.
UTD cut the deficit to two runs in the 4th when Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases load, but the Lutes countered with a run in the bottom of the frame and three more in the 5th to grab an 8-2 lead. The Comets scored their final run in the top of the 7th on an RBI groundout by Smith and PLU scored the final run in the bottom of the frame on Drew Odor's second triple of the contest.
The game was shortened after seven innings due to lights.
Calvin, Campbell (0-1) was handed the loss,giving up two earned runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of work.
