TUCSON, AZ (02.08.15) - The UT Dallas baseball is definitely ready to head home after a 22-10 loss to No. 4 Linfield Sunday afternoon to close the Arizona Desert Classic.
The Comets (now 0-4) fell in a deep hole, falling behind LC, 10-2, after three innings and could not climb back. UTD did have a four-run 6th inning to draw cut the Wildcat lead to 12-9, but Linfield answered with three runs in the 6th and seven runs in the 7th to pull away.
Nolan Smith had a big game for the Comets, going 3-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBI while
Brandon George was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and
Jimmy Norris was 2-for-4 with a steal.
The Comets opened the scoring with two runs on an LC error in the top of the 1st to grab a 1-0 lead, however the Wildcats responded with four runs in each the 1st and 2nd and two runs in the 3rd to grab a 10-2 lead. UTD picked up a run in the 4th on a Cole Johnson single, but Linfield added two in the bottom of the frame to go up 12-3.
Smith would add an RBI triple in each the 5th and 6th to start the Comet rally. Smith's first RBI came in the 5th and he later scored on a
Matthew Young single. In the 6th,
Rodney Corbin singled in Johnson and
Micah Easterling before Smith would triple in Corbin and later score on a passed ball. Down 15-9 after six, the Comets scored their final run in the 7th on a Corbin groundout, scoring
Kaleb Robinson.
Brandon Lee (0-1) was handed the loss, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits in a short 2.1-inning start. Four relievers finished the game for the Comets.
UTD returns to action next weekend with three games at the Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco. The Comets open the weekend Friday at 5 p.m. against Whitman.
