Softball Swept By No. 3 East Texas In Weekend Series

RICHARDSON, TX (03.28.15) - The UT Dallas softball team had its losing streak extended to nine games as the Comets were handed three loss by No. 3-ranked East Texas Baptist this weekend in an American Southwest Conference series.

The Comets (now 10-13, 6-11 ASC) fell to ETBU, 4-3, in Friday's series opener before dropping a pair of games, 5-3 and 10-4, to the Tigers in Saturday's twin bill. ETBU improved to 13-0 overall and 11-0 in ASC play with the wins.

UTD returns to action Thursday to open a three-game series at No. 4-ranked Texas-Tyler. The two teams will open the set with a 6 p.m. game Thursday before a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday afternoon in Tyler.

GAME 1 (FRIDAY ) - ETBU 4, UTD 3
Senior Morgan Anderson belted her first home run of the season in the bottom of the 7th but it wasn't enough as the UT Dallas softball team dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 3-ranked East Texas Baptist Friday night to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series.

The Comets opened the scoring in the 3rd frame as Aly Hudec laced a single through the left side of ETBU infield to bring home Avery McHugh. However, the Tigers plated a single run in each of the next four innings to secure a 4-1 advantage. With two outs and Margeaux Petrash on first base, Anderson would record just her third career long ball, first since her sophomore season, to draw the Comets within a run. But, ETBU pitcher Shelby Parker (6-0) induced a game-ending fly ball by McHugh.

McHugh finished the game 2-for-4, collecting a pair of hits in her first two at bats. After a single to lead off the 1st for UTD, McHugh extended her own Comet record with her 42nd career double with one out in the third. Hudec was 1-for-2 while Anderson and Jordan Bratcher were each 1-for-3. Lauren McLeod tossed into the 7th, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks in 6.1 innings of work. McLeod scattered five hits and struck out one. Megan Aragones finished the 7th, allowing one hit.

For ETBU, Parker got off to a shaky start, giving up four hits to the Comets in the first three frames, before setting down. She retired 12 straight UTD batters before giving up a walk and homer in the 7th. Parker tossed a complete game, striking out nine with two walks.

GAME 2 (SATURDAY) - ETBU 5, UTD 3
The Comets again used a big 7th inning but it was not enough as UTD dropped the second game of the series to the Tigers, 5-3.

After spotting ETBU three runs in the 3rd and two more late runs, the Comets trailed the Tigers, 5-0, heading into the bottom of the 7th. After an ETBU error and a single by Anderson, McHugh blasted her fourth homer of the year to draw the Comets within two runs. However, UTD could not get another base runner in the frame.

Bratcher and Anderson were each 2-for-3 while McHugh finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI. Megan Aragones (0-1) was handed her first loss of the season after making her first start of the year, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in a complete-game performance. Aragones struck out three and walked seven.

For ETBU, Kelly Jo McLendon (6-0) picked up the victory after tossing the first six innings and exiting after McHugh's home run in the 7th. Parker earned the save as she retired the Comets in order after entering the game, with two strikeouts.

GAME 3 (SATURDAY) - ETBU 10, UTD 4
The Tigers were too much to handle for UTD in the series finale as they scored in five straight innings after two teams played two scoreless frames. ETBU used a four-run 7th to pull away before would record yet another solid 7th inning.

With ETBU up 2-0 in the 4th, the Comets got on the scoreboard with a solo home run by Aly Hudec, her third of the season. The Tigers got two runs back in the 5th to regain a 4-1 advantage, but freshman Whitney Wolkow belted her first career homer in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to two runs, 4-2.

The Tigers plated two runs in the 6th and four final runs in the 7th to grab a 10-2 advantage. In the bottom of the 7th, the Comets got back-to-back singles by Taylor Ervin and Jessica Ramos to open the frame followed by an RBI double by McHugh. Bratcher then added an RBI single for the final run of the game. McHugh's RBI in the 7th was her 102th as a Comet, breaking the career mark of 101, set by Carter Ryan (2006-09).

McLeod (5-7) picked up her second loss of the weekend, giving up four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sara Davison tossed two innings, giving up two earned runs, while Taylor Nabors recorded the final two outs of the 7th, giving up two runs. No Comets had more than one hit as Kendall Moore was 1-for-2 and Bratcher, Hudec and Ervin were 1-for-3.

Parker (6-0) earned her second win of the weekend, giving up four runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.
