Johnson's Walk-off Hit Leads Comets To 6-5, 11-Inning Win at CTX

AUSTIN, TX (03.06.15) - Junior Haden Johnson laced a bases-loaded single to right field with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to spark the UT Dallas baseball team to a 6-5 walk-off win over Concordia Texas Friday night to open a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.

The Comets (now 4-7, 2-2 ASC) will close the set, that was originally slated for the UTD Baseball Field, at Tornado Field with a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. The Tornados fell to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in ASC play after suffering their first league loss of the season.

CTX opened the scoring in the 1st with a bases-loaded walk by Garrett Benyo to take an early 1-0 lead. The Comets would not counter until the 4th frame when Johnson plated Brandon Clounch on a sacrifice bunt. UTD had a chance to take control of the contest later in the inning as the Comets loaded the bases on a David McKenzie walk, but could not add any more runs.

The Tornados regained the lead in the 6th on a two-run single by Gareth Hutton to go up, 3-1, but answered with a run in the 7th on a McKenzie double to left, scoring Ryan Downs. CTX seemingly added two insurance runs in the 9th, but the Comets plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.

Batting last due to the games originally scheduled to be home games, the Comets plated their first two runs in the 9th on a Jimmy Norris double and knotted the game, 5-5, with a one-out sacrifice fly by Matthew Young, scoring Norris.

After a scoreless 10th, Comet reliever Aaron Bach sat down CTX in order in the 11th. After back-to-back one-out singles by Tim Cole and Brandon George, Young walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Johnson stepped up to deliver his first walk-off hit in a Comet uniform.

Comet starting pitcher Tyler Dauer did not factor in the decision after giving up just one earned run on two hits in 5.0 innings of work. Dauer struck out seven Tornado batters, but issued four walks. Bach (1-1) was the last of four UTD relievers and tossed two scoreless frames, giving up two hits with four strikeouts.

McKenzie finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as one of four Comets with multi-hit games. Clounch was 2-for-4, Cole 2-for-5 and Nolan Smith was 2-for-6.
