Comets Avoid Sweep At LeTourneau, Rally For 5-3 Win In Finale

LONGVIEW, TX (04.11.15) - After dropping the first two game of the series with late LeTourneau rallies, the UT Dallas softball team ended the weekend with a 5-3 come-from-behind win to close out the American Southwst Conference three-game set, ending a 13-game losing streak in the process.

The Comets (now 11-17, 7-16 ASC) belted out 15 hits in the series finale after collecting a combined nine hits in the first two games. UTD will return home next weekend to host Concordia Texas in the Comets' finale home games of the season. The two teams will play a 6 p.m. game Saturday before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Sunday for "Senior Day".

With Saturday's game two victory, the Comets moved into a three-way tied with LETU anc CTX for sixth place in the ASC standings with two weeks left in the regular season. The top six teams advance to the ASC Tournament the first weekend of May.

GAME 1 - LETU 5, UTD 2 (FRIDAY)
After a near three-hour delay due to late arrival of umpires, the Comets suffered a 5-2 loss at LeTourneau Friday night to open the series.

UTD opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Jordan Bratcher scored from third base on an errant throw by the LETU catcher after a Morgan Anderson steal of second. However, the Lady Jackets answered in the bottom of the frame with a run on a Comet wild pitch. The Comets regained the lead, 2-1, in the 2nd on an RBI double by Bratcher, scoring Taylor Jensen from second base.

But, LETU again answered in the Lady Jacket's half of the inning with an RBI single by Ashley Hickerson, scoring Rachel Gauspohl. After three scoreless frames, Gauspohl would provide LETU the winning runs with a three-run blast, her third of the season.

Lauren McLeod (5-10) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Megan Aragones relieved McLeod with one out in the 6th, recording one strikeout. The Comets managed just four hits off of LETU starter Kaylee Pritchett in the loss with Bratcher going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

GAME 2 - LETU 3, UTD 1 (SATURDAY)
The Comets again succumbed to a three-run 6th frame as UTD dropped the first game of Saturday's doubleheader the Lady Jackets, 3-1.

UTD got on the board in the 3rd with RBI single by Anderson, scoring Jensen. However, LETU got to Comet starter Sara Davison with three runs on four hits in the 6th to steal away the game. The Lady Jackets knotted the game with an RBI single by Whitney Judd. LETU added a run-scoring single by Taylor Kaderli to take the lead and got an insurance run on a Gauspohl ground ball later in the frame.

Davison (5-6) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in 5.0-plus innings. Davison struck out three and did not issue a walk. Aragones took over with the bases loaded in the 6th and had a strikeout. The Comets managed five hits off of Pritchett with Jensen finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored.

GAME 3 - UTD 5, LETU 3 (SATURDAY)
The Comets finished one hit shy of their season high as they rallied for a 5-3 win over LeTourneau to avoid the weekend sweep.

The host Lady Jackets (12-19, 7-16 ASC) opened the scoring with two runs in the 1st and another tally in the 2nd to stake a quick 3-0 lead. UTD got on the scoreboard in the 3rd with an Anderson RBI single, scoring Bratcher, and added a second run in the inning on a bases-loaded single by Whitney Wolkow. The Comets tied the game in the 4th with a two-out Avery McHugh single, scoring Taylor Ervin.

Anderson then picked up her second home run of the season as she blasted a shot down the left field line with one out in the 6th. Three batters later, Jessica Ramos handed the Comets an insurance run with an RBI single, scoring McHugh.

Sophomore Taylor Nabors (1-0) picked up her first career victory in the circle as she tossed 5.2 innings in relief of starter McLeod. McLeod gave up three early runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work before making an early exit. Nabors would scatter two hits over her longest appearance of the season. McHugh and Ramos each finished 3-for-4, leading five Comets with multi-hit games. Wolkow was 2-for-3 while Anderson and Jonelle Feikis were 2-for-4.
