RICHARDSON, TX (04.25.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon as the Comets dropped a 13-3 decision to McMurry to open a three-game non-conference series.
The Comets (now 21-14) will wrap up the home portion of their regular season schedule Sunday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader with the War Hawks at the UTD Baseball Field.
McMurry (now 29-9), a future American Southwest Conference member still in transition from NCAA Division II status, used a five-run 4th inning, capped by a three-run home run by Joel Villarreal, to pull ahead early and never trailed as the War Hawks pounded out 14 hits off four UTD pitchers. Trailing 5-0 in the 5th, the Comets mounted a rally, scoring three runs six hits, but left the bases loaded. McMurry then esponded with one run in the 7th, three in the 8th and four final runs in the 4th to pull away.
The War Hawks finished the game with three homers, getting a two-run shot by Ben Douglas in the 8th and a three-run shot by Mikal Hunter in the 9th.
In the 5th frame,
Ryan Downs and
Pierce Fly got things started for the Comets with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt by
Jimmy Norris, the Comets got on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout by
Tim Cole, scoring Downs. UTD added RBI singles by
Brandon George and
Haden Johnson later in the inning.
Tyler Dauer (6-4) was handed the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Dauer struck six and walked one in the loss.
Micah Easterling took over in the 6th and gave up just one hit in 1.1 innings before leaving the game due to injury.
Zach Rubel took over with one out in the 7th and allowed four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Nick Cummings tossed the 9th, giving up four runs on three hits.
Kaleb Robinson led the UTD offense which tallied 10 hits on the afternoon. Robinson was 3-for-4 as one of three Comets with multi-hit games. George and Johnson each finished 2-for-4.
