Comets Outlast U. Dallas, 14-9, In Mid-Week Road Win

IRVING, TX (04.07.15) - The UT Dallas baseball team topped double digits in both runs and hits for the third straight game Tuesday afternoon as the Comets snagged a 14-9 road win over the University of Dallas in non-conference play.

The Comets (now 15-13) return to American Southwest Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Ozarks. UTD and the Eagles open the set with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Clarksville, Ark.

UTD opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Brandon George gave the Comets a quick 1-0 lead over the Crusaders with his third home run of the season. The Comets would add another run in the 3rd and two more in the 4th to grab an early 4-0 cushion. In the 3rd, Tim Cole knocked in Pierce Fly with a sacrifice fly. UTD then got a run on a double by Kaleb Robinson and an RBI ground out by Bobby Garner in the 4th.

However, the host Crusaders (6-22) would plate five runs in the bottom of the 4th, taking advantage of six consecutive hits and then added another run in the 5th to secure a 6-4 advantage.

In the top of the 6th, the Comets used four-straight RBI singles to regain the lead, 8-6. Jimmy Norris started the scoring, scoring in Haden Johnson with a knock through the left side of the UD infield. Cole then plated Fly with a single laced down the left field line to knot the game, 6-6. George picked up his second RBI of the day with a single to left, scoring Norris, before Brandon Clounch completed the scoring in the frame with a single to right, plating Cole.

The Comets then put the game out of reach with five runs on six singles and a hit batter in the 7th. With two on and one out, Fly plated Robinson and Johnson with a single to left, giving UTD a 10-6 advantage. Three batters later, George collected two more RBI with a bases-loaded single, scoring Fly and Norris. Wesley Gill added a two-out infield single, scoring Cole, to give the Comets a 13-6 lead.

The Crusaders got a run back in the bottom of the frame to cut the UTD lead to 13-7, but the Comets answered back in the top of the 8th with a single by Cole, scoring Johnson. UD would plate two runs in the 9th on a homer by Anthony Armstrong.

Cole Hanson started the game, tossing a pair of hitless innings with four strikeouts. Matt McKennon then pitched a scoreless 3rd before getting David McKenzie gave up four runs in the 4th without recording an out. Nick Cummings completed the 4th, giving up an unearned run. Tristan DerMargosian (1-0) then snaked his first win as a Comet, tossing the 5th and 6th with three strikeouts. Andrew Leilich then had a 2.0-inning relief appearance, giving up an unearned run on one hit with one strikeout. John Quisenberry tossed the 9th, giving up two runs.

George finished the contest 3-for-6 with four RBI and a run scored as one of six Comets with multi-hit games. Cole was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a two runs scored while Johnson and Fly were 2-for-3, Gill was 2-for-4 and Robinson was 2-for-6. UTD finished with a season-high 16 hits as a team.
