RICHARDSON, TX (09.01.15) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team held rival Texas-Tyler without a shot on goal as the Comets used two second-half tallies to earn a 2-0 win in the season opener for both teams. While both teams are member of the American Southwest Conference, Tuesday night's game was a non-conference contest.
After a scoreless opening half,
J.T. Hawkins opened the scoring in the 63rd minute as he took a pass from the left from
Connor Crabtree and chipped the UTT keeper.
Erik Reyes gave the Comets an insurance goal in the 70th minute as he collected a loose ball after an
Isaac Urcuyo entry pass and beat the keeper to the left.
UTD finished with just nine shots, but had seven on goal, while the Patriots ended the game with 10 shots, all off target. Hawkins, who made his return to the field after missing the 2014 season due to injury, finished with a game-high three shots, two on goal, while
Jason Horvath finished with two shots, both on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Tyler Cotter played the entire 90 minutes and logged his first career shutout.
The Comets (1-0) continue their sixth-game home stand to open the new season Friday as they host Pacific Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
