MARSHALL, TX (09.15.15) - East Texas Baptist had not lost a home match in four seasons, until Tuesday night as the UT Dallas volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 win over the Tigers in the American Southwest Conference openers for both teams.
The Comets (now 8-2, 1-0 ASC) dropped the opening set to ETBU, 25-17, but bounced back with three wins to earn the victory. UTD took the second set, 25-20, and the third set, 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead. The Comets then opened the fourth and deciding set with a 14-2 cushion before holding of, ETBU, 25-20, to end the match.
Holyn Handley finished with a match-high 19 kills, hitting .304, while adding eight digs and two blocks. Handley did most of her damage late in the match, picking up seven kills in the third set and six kills in the final stanza.
Abbie Barth added 14 kills, while pitching in 18 digs and a block. Senior setter
Kayla Jordan collected 46 assists, nearly 12.0 per set, and had nine digs, two kills and a block.
UTD hit .239 as a team, its best in six matches, despite hitting just .152 in the opening set. The Comets had just nine kills in the opener with four errors.
For ETBU (now 7-2, 0-1 ASC), Mallory Sander had a team-best 18 kills as the only Tiger in double digits. Hannah Jones had a team-high 17 digs. The loss for ETBU snapped an 18-match home court winning streak by the Tigers and was the first home loss for the program since the 2011 season.
Next up for the Comets is a pair of non-conference road games over the weekend. UTD will first visit Hendrix at 7 p.m. Friday in Conway, Ark., and then face Rhodes at 3 p.m. Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.
