Comet Women Rout Howard Payne In ASC Opener, 6-1

BROWNWOOD, TX (09.19.15) - Junior Megan Mugavero and freshman Jessica Rusk each scored twice while freshman Jacqueline Kaufman collected three assists as the UT Dallas women's soccer team rolled to a 6-1 win over Howard Payne in the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams.

The Comets (now 5-2, 1-0 ASC) struck first in the 11th minute on Mugavero's first goal, thanks to a cross from Rachel Mullen, and were then mired in a lightning delay that lasted longer than hour. Upon return to the field, Mugavero doubled UTD's lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute, assisted by Kaufman, and Rusk tallied her first collegiate goal, assisted by Tatum Moog, in the 36th minute, giving the Comets a 3-0 lead at the break.

After UTD gave up a goal early in the second half, Rusk gave the Comets back a three-goal advantage in the 54th minute as Kaufman collected her second assist of the afternoon. UTD added goals by freshmen Taylor Rasmussen and MaKayla Forsberg late in the game to complete the rout. Rasmussen's tally was assisted by Carson Sharp, while Forsberg's final goal was assisted by Kaufman.

The Comets finished the match with 21 shots, 14 on goal, with Mugavero, Rusk and Kaufman each with four shots. HPU (now 1-3, 0-1 ASC) managed just seven shots, three on goal.

UTD starting keeper Monica Dallacasa needed just one save in a shutout first half, while Kristi Istre allowed one goal and made a save in the second half.

The Comets return to action next weekend with ASC road games at Mary Hardin-Baylor (Friday) and Concordia Texas (Saturday).
