RICHARDSON, TX (09.04.15) - Just like in the opening game of the season, the UT Dallas women's soccer team needed just a little more time to earn a win as the Comets secured a 2-1 overtime decision over Principia in their home opener.
Wednesday night at LeTourneau it was junior
Megan Mugavero who tallied the game-winner with just under three minutes left in the first overtime period. Friday night, freshman
Amanda Avalos stepped up and gave UTD the victory, recording her first collegiate goal with 3:57 left in the first extra frame against the Panthers.
The Comets took little time to grab a 1-0 advantage as freshman
Melissa Fulfer tallied in the 9th minute. Fulfer took a pass from Avalos and beat the Principia keeper one-on-one to put the Comets on top. However, Principia would counter early in the second half as Panther Emma Dixon rolled a shot past UTD keeper
Monica Dallacasa, in the 55th minute.
Avalos' game-winner came from 30 yards out as she drilled a bullet into the left corner of the night, passed a diving keeper.
Mugavero and
Jacqueline Kaufman each finished with a game-high five shots, both with three shots on goal. Avalos took four shots, two on goal, while
Rachel Mullen and
Millie Atkins each had three shots. UTD out-shot the Panthers, 30-3, with 13 shots on goal.
Principia keeper Genevieve Smith had 11 saves while Dallacasa needed to make just one save.
The Comets return to action Sunday afternoon with they host Mount Saint Mary College. Game time is 12 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
