AUSTIN, TX (01.18.16) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team put an end to its four-game losing streak Monday night with a 75-65 road win over Concordia Texas in American Southwest Conference crossover play.
The Comets (now 9-6, 3-4 ASC) took a a big early lead, but had to battle from behind in the second half to pick up their first win in two weeks. UTD will try for two in a row Thursday night as the Comets visit East Texas Baptist in ASC East Division play. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Marshall.
UTD used a 25-11 first quarter to grab early control of the game, however the host Tornados outscored the Comets, 26-9, in the second quarter to snag a 37-34 lead at the half. CTX extended its lead to as many as seven points in the third quarter before the Comets would begin their rally.
Down 45-38 with 7:26 left in the third frame, UTD used an 8-0 run, capped by a
Nicolette Erkman lay up to regain a 46-45 advantage 3:42 remaining in the period. The two teams then traded leads before the Comets secured a 53-51 lead at the end of the third after a
Tyra Banks lay up.
The Comets opened the fourth period with a 6-0 run and never looked back as UTD would hit its free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Madison Steele and
Micaela Gonzalez each finished with a team-high 15 points while
Jasmine Lopez and
Kendall Festervand each added 10 points to round out the Comets in double digits. Steele had a team-best eight rebounds while
Shannon Mathis dished out five assists.
The Comets finished the night shooting 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field, connecting on 7-of-15 three-pointers (46.7%), and shot 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the foul line. UTD out-rebounded the Tornados, 42-36.
For CTX (7-8, 0-6 ASC), Jaela Dejean scored a game-high 16 points to lead five Tornados in double figures. CTX shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the floor, hitting 8-of-14 three-pointers (57.1%), while shooting 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the free-throw line.
