Comet Women Pull Away From Belhaven For 55-48 Road Win

JACKSON, MS (01.28.16) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team picked up its second straight win Thursday night as the Comets downed American Southwest Conference newcomer Belhaven, 55-48.

The Comets (now 11-7) held an opponent to a season-low 28.8 percent from the field while dominating the boards, 49-35, earning their third win in four outings. UTD will look to make it three in row Monday night as the Comets host Ozarks. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

Trailing the host Blazers, 39-38, with just under seven minutes to play, UTD used a 10-1 run over the next five-plus minutes, capped by a Jasmine Lopez three-pointer, to lift the Comets to a 48-40 advantage with 1:13 remaining. Belhaven got a three-pointer by Erika Smith with 35 seconds on the clock, but UTD hit its free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

UTD struggled from the field in the opening half, shooting 24 percent (6-of-25) as a team, but went 9-for-14 from the free throw line over the first two periods to trail the Blazers by just two points, 25-23, at the break.

The Comets opened the second half with a three-pointer by Lopez to take the lead, but Belhaven responded with a 6-0 run to snag a 31-26 lead with 7:41 left in the third period. The Blazers led most of the frame before Shannon Mathis hit a three-pointer with 1:31 left in the period to give UTD a 36-35 lead heading to the fourth.

Micaela Gonzalez led the Comets with 17 points and nine rebounds, both game highs, as she nearly recorded her sixth "double-double" of the season. Lopez added a season-high 14 points, hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers, as the only other UTD player in double figures.

The Comets finished the night shooting 31.3 percent (15-of-48) from the field, connecting on 7-of-20 three-pointers (35%), and shot 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the foul line. Thanks to help around the ASC, UTD moved into a tie for fourth place in the East Division standings, currently knotted with Louisiana College at 4-5.

For Belhaven (now 6-12), Sierra Pittman scored a team-high 13 points while Kyra Washington came off the bench for 10 points. Belhaven was just 17-of-59 from the field, shooting just 9.5 percent (2-of-21) from three-point range, and shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the line.
