ABILENE, TX (01.07.16) - An offensive foul with one second left in regulation sealed the No. 24-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team's second loss in three outings as the Comets fell on the road at Hardin-Simmons, 62-60, Thursday night in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 8-3, 2-2 ASC) led the majority of the evening before the host Cowgirls rallied late and iced the game with a two free throws by Danie Mabry with five seconds on the clock. On UTD's next possession, junior
Micaela Gonzalez was called for a charge in the paint on her potential game-tying lay up.
UTD will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon as the Comets visit McMurry. Game time is 1 p.m. in Abilene.
The Comets shot just 11-for-33 (33.3%) from the field in the opening half, yet still maintained a 32-27 lead heading into halftime. However, HSU (now 4-10, 2-3 ASC) rallied to knot the game, 45-45, after three quarters. The Cowgirls took their first lead of the night with 1:41 left in the third frame when Heidi Schroeder lifted HSU to a 43-42 lead. The Comets answered with a three-pointer by
McKenzie Petty on their next trip down the floor to regain the lead, but Mabry hit two free throws to complete the third quarter scoring.

Shannon Mathis gave UTD a 51-49 lead with a three-pointer with 8:19 left to play. The Comets retained their lead for nearly seven minutes before HSU's Kourtney Holyfield jumper with 1:36, giving the Cowgirls a 59-58 advantage. After a free throw by Holyfield just over a minute later,
Zavier Landry knotted the game, 60-60, with 23 seconds left. HSU killed most of the clock before foul by Landry sent Mabry to the line for the game-winning free throws.
The Comets finished the night shooting just 32.8 percent (22-of-67) from the field, hitting 5-of-13 three-pointers (38.5%), and were just 11-of-22 (50%) from the line. Landry led UTD with 13 points while Gonzalez finished with nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
For HSU, Mabry scored a game-high 21 points to lead four Cowgirls in double digits. Holyfield finished with 15 points, Schroeder 13 points and Kayla Brown had 10 points. Schoeder recorded a "double-double", adding a game-high 11 rebounds.
