ABILENE, TX (10.01.16) - Heading to overtime for the fourth consecutive game, the UT Dallas men's soccer team earned sudden-death victory 3:19 in the first extra frame as the Comets upended McMurry, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.
Junior
Danny Meyer netted the game-winner for the Comets after finding a loose ball in front of the McMurry net after a
Mason Anderson touch. The goal was also made possible by a strong corner kick from the right by Comet
Erik Reyes, leaving the McMurry defense in disarray.
The Comets (now 6-3-1, 3-0-1 ASC) had plenty of chances throughout the match, out-shooting host McMurry, 21-4, but could not end the game in regulation. Meyer's goal was the only shot by either team in overtime. UTD had six shots on goal in the contest, compared to two by the WarHawks.
Meyer led the Comets with four shots, but his game-winner was his only on frame in the contest.
Kevin Whatley and
Connor Crabtree each finished with three shots. UTD keeper
Joseph Weber made two saves in the shutout.
UTD has now played five overtime games this season, including all four ASC contests, and improved to 3-1-1 in its contests that went beyond regulation.
The Comets return to action Saturday, Oct. 8, when they host Howard Payne. Game time is 7 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
