Comets Inch Closer to Hosting ASC Tourney After 2-1 Win Over UTT

RICHARDSON, TX (10.20.16) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team now needs just one win over its final two American Southwest Conference games to host next month's league championship tournament after a 2-1 home win over rival Texas-Tyler Thursday night.

Curerntly ranked third in the NCAA Division III West Region, the Comets (now 10-3-1, 7-0-1 ASC) sit all alone atop the ASC standings with two league games remaining. UTD will host Ozarks Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for Senior Day before visiting winless Louisiana College next Saturday. UTD also plays Belhaven next Thursday, but the results will not count in the standings due to Belhaven's provisional status.

On Thursday, senior midfielder Kevin Whatley recorded his first two goals of the season Thursday night and single-handedly lifted UTD to the narrow victory. Whatley opened the scoring in the 8th minute when he found himself open right in front of the Patriot net. Sam Konstanty centered the ball from the left and was redirected by Danny Meyer as both Comets collected assists on the goal. However, UTT would even the game, 1-1, in the 41st minute on an unassisted tally by Leandro Fernandez, the Patriots' leading goal scorer.

In the 66th minute, Whatley again found himself alone with the ball after two clean passes from teammates. After a centering pass from Alfredo Kaegi and a touch by Daaron McFarling, Whatley drilled home the game-winner from 15 yards out past a diving UTT keeper.

Whatley finished with just two shots while Kaegi had a team-high four shots and Connor Crabtree managed three shots. The Comets ended the night with 13 shots, seven on goal. UTD keeper Joseph Weber made five saves in a full 90-minute outing.
