Comets Clinch Top Spot In ASC Tourney With 7-1 Rout on Senior Day

RICHARDSON, TEXAS (10.22.16) - On a day that the UT Dallas men's soccer team honored nine outgoing seniors at their final regular season home game, the underclassmen stepped up and powered the Comets to a 7-1 American Southwest Conference victory over The University of Ozarks at the UTD Soccer Complex Saturday evening.

The victory clinched the top seed in the upcoming ASC Championship Tournament for the Comets, who improved to 11-3-1 overall and 8-0-1 in conference play with just one ASC game remaining.  UTD can do no worse than tie Mary Hardin-Baylor for the top spot in the point standings, and will host the tournament with the top six teams on November 3, 5 and 6.

Ozarks, which is still fighting for one of those top six spots, fell to 9-4-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play.

Junior Danny Meyer had the Comets out to a 3-0 lead with a hat trick before the Eagles knew what had hit them. Freshman Jordan Henderson then netted a pair of second half tallies. Freshman Alfredo Kaegi scored his team-best 12th goal of the season just before halftime and junior Jude Anuwe pocketed his second goal of the season to round out the scoring.

The Comets pelted a pair UO goalkeepers with a 32-8 shot advantage, putting 16 of those on goal. Seven found their way to the back of the net before Ozarks picked up a late goal to avoid the shutout.

Meyer started the scoring just 4:52 into the match, grabbing a touch and shot off a Kevin Whatley Corner and Brad Rivenes assist. He was back on the board just six minutes later with his second goal, taking a cross from Kasden Williams and Erik Reyes. Then, with less than 10 minutes remaining before halftime, he finished off the hat trick, chasing down a long, bouncing kick from UTD keeper Joseph Weber and firing it past OU's Luis Mena, who left down 4-0 after Kaegi connected on a long shot from outside that drew Mena out of the net.

The Comet benches emptied in the second half, but that didn't stop the scoring. Henderson took off on a breakaway down the middle just :32 into the second period and punched in a pass from Anuwe. Anuwe followed that up at the 55:00 mark, connecting on a pass from Whatley at the top of the box. Henderson finished off the UTD scoring on another play up the middle, assisted by Alex Botello.

The Comets still have two ASC road games remaining next weekend, facing Belhaven and Louisiana College. The game against Belhaven will not count in ASC standings, but a victory over winless LC could give the Comets an outright regular season title.
