ST. LOUIS, MO (10.22.16) - The No. 8-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team collected its 18th straight win and by doing so earned its first-ever win over a top 10 team in a sweep of No. 3-ranked Wittenberg to close out the Active Ankle Invite Saturday.
The Comets (now 23-1) earned a 25-22, 25-15, 25-23, win over Wittenberg, earning their second consecutive over a nationally opponent. UTD battled past tournament host and No. 17-ranked Washington-St. Louis in four sets Friday night.
Freshman
Dylan Brinkman matched a UTD three-set record with 19 kills while hitting at a .333 clip with nine digs as the Comets (now 23-1) dominated the Tigers (now 16-4). The Comets, the NCAA Division III leader in kills and assists per set, hit .277 as a team for the match while averaging nearly 17 kills per set.
The Comets took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set against WU and controlled the majority of the stanza en route to a 25-22 win to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers clawed back midway through the set to take a 17-15 lead on back-to-back UTD hitting errors, but the Comets bounced back later in the set, using kills by
Emma Wallbrown and
Michelle Toro to regain the lead, 21-20. UTD would end the set on a 7-2 run.
UTD never trailed in the second set, but held off three early ties forced by the Tigers before pulling away. The Comets hit .361 in the second set for a 25-18 win to take a commanding 2-0 lead, getting six kills from Brinkman in the set.
Wittenberg opened the third set with a 6-0 run and extended its lead to 10-2 before the Comets regained composure to complete the sweep. UTD eventually knotted the set at 15-15 on a Brinkman put-away and took a one-point lead with a kill by
Lauren Schilling. The two teams would trade leads before and the Tigers would knot the game at 23-23, but UTD ended the match with a kill and ace by
Abbie Barth.
Barth finished the match with 11 kills and four digs while Toro had nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Libero
Briana Tully led UTD with 13 digs.
Fayna Zeng had 20 assists while
Caroline Shecterle had 18 assists in the Comets' 6-2 offense.
UTD returns to action Tuesday night when they will look for the 30th straight American Southwest Conference regular-season win against Texas-Tyler. Match time is 7 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
