RICHARDSON, TX (11.13.16) - The No. 4-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team fought off seven match points in the fourth set only to drop a 3-2 decision to No. 7-ranked Southwestern Sunday afternoon in the regional title match of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
The Comets, who ended their season with a 32-3 overall mark, celebrated the winningest season in program history and claimed their second straight and fourth overall American Southwest Conference title in 2016. UTD became just the third ASC volleyball team to advance to the regional finals, joining former league teams Texas Lutheran (2004) and Austin College (2005).
The Pirates took the first two sets (25-20, 25-21) before UTD rallied for a 25-21 win in the third set. The Comets faced elimination at 24-18 in the fourth set before rolling off six straight points to knot the set, 24-24, on the service of freshman
Dylan Brinkman. Southwestern ended the run with a Kirby Kincannon kill to give the Pirates back a chance to win the match at 25-24, but Brinkman responded with a kill to re-tie the stanza, 25-25. The Comets then got kills from seniors
Holyn Handley and
Michelle Toro to force the fifth set.
Southwestern opened the fifth set with three straight points and took an 8-5 lead when the teams traded sides. The Comets slowly climbed back, drawing within a point at four times (10-9, 11-10 and 12-11 and 13-12) before eventually tied the frame, 13-13, on a Pirate service ace. Southwestern earned its eighth match point of the afternoon on a Jamison Duck kill and ended the marathon match with a Kincannon put-away.
The Comets finished the match hitting just .120 for the match, improving after far below their season average over the opening two sets. UTD hit .244 in the third set as the Comets became their comeback, but hit just .100 as a team in the fourth set. The Comets hit .152 in the final frame. Southwestern ended match hitting .182 and amassed 147 digs (nearly 30 per set).
Brinkman led the UTD offense with 14 kills while adding a team-high 30 digs and four blocks while Toro and freshman
Lauren Schilling each had 12 kills and Handley finished with 10 kills. The Comets had 16 blocks in the match, with Schilling leading the way with eight rejections for the second straight match. UTD matched its season high with 133 digs.
Brinkman and Schilling were named the All-Tournament Team.
