Kyle Coulter hit seven three-pointers for a team-high 21 points as the UT Dallas men's basketball team suffered a 75-56 home loss to in-region rival Trinity Tuesday night at the UTD Activity Center as both teams opened the 2016-17 season.
The Comets (0-1) return to action this weekend when they compete in the Guilford College Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. UTD will open the event Friday at 6 p.m. against host Guilford.
Coulter was 7-for-9 from three-point range and added five rebounds as the Comets shot 33.3 percent from the field as a team.
Jon Hatcher was the only other Comet to reach double figures with 14 points along with a team-high seven rebounds while
Caleb Banks had seven points and three assists.
After shooting 50 percent over the opening half, Trinity (1-0) took a 44-26 lead into the locker room. The Comets would cut the deficit back to 10 points, 50-40, with 13:20 left to play in the game after back-to-back treys by Coulter, but UTD would never climb back within single digits.
UTD finished the game 19-of-57 from the field and hit 12-of-29 (41.4%) three-pointers. The Comets were 6-of-14 (42.9%) from the free-throw line.
