Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (11.05.16) - The defending American Southwest Conference champion UT Dallas men's soccer team will have a chance to defend its title in the ASC championship game Sunday afternoon after outlasting Concordia Texas in a semifinal penalty kick shootout on Saturday.
UTD goalkeeper
Joseph Weber, who made the first stop on the PK shootout at last year's ASC title game against UT Tyler, made a diving stop of Concordia's fourth attempt off the foot of Alejandro Labastida. The Comets'
Hernan Ramos then converted UTD's fifth shot to the lower right side past a diving CTX keeper, giving the Comets (12-4-2) a 5-3 edge in the shootout. The game actually is officially recorded as a tie with UTD advancing on the shootout. Concordia's season ended with a 13-4-1 record.
UTD will play second-seeded Hardin-Simmons, which also won in a semifinal shootout, in the ASC title game Sunday at 1 pm.
The two semifinalists battled through 110 minutes of scoreless regulation and overtime periods before forcing the shootout to decide the finalist. Weber rescued the Comets on numerous occasions with seven saves, including two in the second OT period. The Comets ended the game with 14 shots, putting three on goal, all in the second half and overtime periods. CTX keeper Rob Oakley made three saves and did not allow a goal, but gave way to teammate Jesus Barrera in the net during the shootout. Barrera did not make a stop during the shootout.Â
The Comets got shootout scores from
Stephen Melchor,
Alfredo Kaegi,
Jude Anuwe and
Isaac Urcuyo before Ramos' game-winner. Kaegi's shot provided the most drama as it sailed high and caromed off the crossbar before finding the net.
Kevin Whatley and Kaegi led UTD with three shots each as UTD ended the game with a 14-12 shot advantage. Labastida and Diego Outerial each had three shots for the Tornados.
