Explosive First Half Lifts Comets to 110-67 Rout Of Ozarks

RICHARDSON, TX (02.01.16) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team tied a school record with 16 three-pointers as the Comets rolled to a 110-67 home win over Ozarks in American Southwest Conference play.

The Comets (now 13-5, 6-4 ASC) outscored Ozarks, 63-37, by shooting 56.4 percent from the field in the first half with nine three-pointers to set the tone for the squad's largest margin of victory of the season. All 15 player on the roster scored in the lop-sided victory as the Comets set a new program record for three-point attempts (38) and tied the all-time mark for rebounds (59).

No UTD player scored more than 12 points and no Comet reached double-figure rebounds as it was a team-effort from the start. UTD was 9-for-18 from three-point range and a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line over the opening 20 minutes to take over the game early and never looked back. The Comets led by as many as 28 points on the three occasions in the first half before finally taking their first 30-point lead of the night with 16:53 left after a Dapo Ogunfeitmi lay up lifted UTD to a 68-37 advantage. UTD widened its margin to as many as 45 points late in the contest.

Ben Smith led four Comets in double-figure scoring with a team-best 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench. Jon Hatcher scored 11 points, all in the first half, while Ogunfeitmi and Noah Hill each contributed 10 points. Reagan Keogh finished with a team-high nine rebounds, five offensive, while Caleb Banks dished out seven assists.

The 100-point performance was the first by the Comets since a 103-83 win over Texas-Tyler in the 2014 ASC Tournament, and the 43-point winning margin was the widest by UTD since earlier the same season, a 94-49 win over Concordia Texas (46 points) on Jan. 18, 2014. UTD's 110 points was the most by the program since a 118-112 overtime win over Concordia Texas on Dec. 9, 2006, and the second-high total ever for a game ending in regulation.

UTD topped 10 three-pointers for the eighth time this season and matched the school record since on Jan. 18, 2010, also against Ozarks, and equaled against Howard Payne two years ago to the day. The previous record for three-point attempts was 35, set against Louisiana College on Jan. 17, 2004.

The Comets' season-high 24 offensive rebounds helped the squad match the school mark of boards, set against Louisiana College on Jan. 2, 2014.

The Comets, currently sitting in second place in the ASC East, return to action Thursday with a quick road trip to Mary Hardin-Baylor. UTD will then return home Saturday afternoon for a meeting with new ASC member Belhaven.
