Comets Finish Season Sweep of Louisiana College With 64-49 Home Win

RICHARDSON, TX (02.11.16) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team moved into fourth place in the American Southwest Conference East Division standings Thursday night after a 64-49 home win over Louisiana College, capping the first season sweep of the Lady Wildcats in seven seasons.

The Comets (now 14-8, 6-6 ASC) can now clinch a 10th straight ASC Tournament berth with one win in their final three games. UTD returns to action Saturday afternoon as the Comets host East Texas Baptist for Senior Day. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

Nicolette Erkman came off the bench for a game-high 15 points to lead four Comets in double figures while Micaela Gonzalez teased with the first "triple-double" in program history. Gonzalez finished with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for her seventh "double-double" of the season, while adding a game-high six assists.

UTD used a strong finish to the second quarter, to grab a 35-27 lead over the visiting Lady Wildcats at the break and extended its lead to to 11 points, 46-35, after three frames after a Tyra Banks' lay up late in the quarter. The Lady Wildcats rallied early in the fourth period, drawing within five points on three occasions before UTD put them away. Leading 52-47 with 6:20 left to play, the Comets mounted a 12-0 run, holding LC to 0-5 shooting and forcing three during the stretch, to secure a 64-47 advantage, with just under a minute to play, capped by a Kendall Festervand put back with 54 seconds left.

With the game tied, 15-15, after first period, the two teams traded leads six times before a three-pointer by Jasmine Lopez gave UTD the lead for good, 23-22, with 6:34 left before halftime. Lopez' trey sparked a 15-5 run to end the half.

The Comets, now winners of five of their last six games, finished the night shooting 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field while shooting 60 percent (9-of-15) from the free-throw line. UTD out-rebounded the Lady Wildcats, 49-36. Erkman was 7-for-10 from the field and added four blocks and four rebounds.

The UTD women completed the season sweep over the perennial ASC-contender Lady Wildcats for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The Comets earned a 62-61 road win over LC on Jan. 23, the Comets' first road win in the series since 2009.
