RICHARDSON, TX (02.13.16) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team picked up its biggest win of the season Saturday afternoon as the Comets upset division-leading East Texas Baptist, 69-68, in American Southwest Conference East Division play, snapping the Tigers' 11-game winning streak.
The Comets (now 16-7, 8-5 ASC) handed ETBU just its third conference loss of the season and needed a lucky roll as time expired to do so. Not out of regular-season home games, UTD will wrap up the regular season next week with a pair of ASC East road contests. Next up for the Comets is a Thursday night game at LeTourneau. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. in Longview.
UTD nearly led the regionally ranked Tigers wire-to-wire but a late Comets turnover nearly proved to spoil the afternoon. Two
Caleb Banks free throws with 23 seconds left lifted UTD to a 68-63 advantage, but Tiger Jordan Quillian answered with a lay up to draw ETBU back within three points. After
Kyle Coulter then hit 1-of-2 free throws with 11 ticks on the clock, ETBU answered with a three-pointer by Bret Atkins to draw within a point five seconds later. The Tigers then stole the in-bounds pass, but two potential game-winning lay ups fell off the rim.
Coulter finished with his second "double-double" of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs, leading four Comets in double-digit scoring. Banks and
Chase Davis also had 13 points while
Ben Smith pitched in 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Comets finished the first half with a 9-2 run as they strolled into the locker room with a 33-25 halftime advantage. UTD opened the second half with a three-pointer by
Ben Smith and led the Tigers for most of the second half. With 3:39 left to play, ETBU would take its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest as Bret Atkins hit a three-pointer to cap a 8-0 run by the visiting Tigers. However, the Comets regained the lead for good just over a minute later after a pair of Davis free throws and held off last season's ASC champions in the final minute.
UTD overcame its second-lowest shooting percentage of the season as the Comets were just 24-of-66 (36.4%) from the field. The Comets shot just 28 percnet (7-for-25) from three-point range but hit 14-of-19 free throws (73.7%).
The Tigers, who already clinched the ASC East title last week, fell to 19-5 overall and 12-3 in ASC play with the loss.
