GRAND PRAIRIE, TX (02.14.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team improved to 3-0 for the second time in three seasons after a 15-9 win over Hendrix on the final day of the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic at AirHog Stadium.
The Comets' early-season offensive explosion continued Sunday afternoon as UTD (3-0) belted out 18 hits against Hendrix, brinigng the team's three-game totals to 49 runs and 52 hits over the opening weekend. UTD will look to extend its winning streak and garner some national attention next weekend when they travel to meet No. 7-ranked Trinity in a three-game series in San Antonio.
Against winless Hendrix (0-3), the Comets needed all the runs they could muster as the Warriors rallied twice to tie the game before a five-run 6th inning opened things up for UTD.
Junior
Nolan Smith led an attack with a 4-for-4 game, including an inside-the-park home run in a five-run 1st. He led the team with four RBI. Outfielders
David McKenzie and
Josh Covey also had three hits apiece. McKenzie picked up a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. The Comets also ran wild on the Warriors, stealing eight bases, including three by Covey.
Jonathan May (1-0), a transfer from LaPorte, picked up his first win of the season.
The Comets, who were viisitors in the game, jumped out to a 5-0 lead right out of the gate, collecting five hits, including RBI tallies by McKenzie,
Haden Johnson and Smith. But Hendrix, which had been shut out in its first two games, tied the game up by matching the Comets with a five-run, five-hit 1st.
Covey beat out an infield single to open the 2nd, and later gave UTD a 6-5 lead, scoring on a double play ball. UTD added another single run in the 3rd to go up 7-5 when McKenzie led off with a double and came around on Smith's second hit of the game. The Warriors then tied the game up at 7-7 in the bottom of the 5th with a two-out clutch single that brought home two runs.
But the Comets were not to be denied. After the first two hitters were erased to start the 6th, UTD strung together four hits and four walks, and pushed five runs across before leaving the bases loaded.
Nick Marti and McKenzie put a pair of blistering drives back-to-back to bring home three runs, and Smith added an RBI.
A three-error 8th inning by the Warrior defense set the stage for three more UTD hits and three more runs, pushing the lead to 15-8.
Jimmy Norris and Johnson both delivered RBI hits in the inning.
