Baseball Swept By No. 7 Trinity In Weekend Series

SAN ANTONIO, TX (02.20.16) - After an opening weekend that saw the UT Dallas baseball team average more than 15 runs per game, the Comets had a rough second weekend keeping up with nationally-ranked Trinity University, which took all three games in the non-conference set.

The Comets (now 3-3) opened the series with a 7-4 loss to the 7th-ranked Tigers Friday before suffering a pair of losses Saturday, 8-7 and 11-4. UTD returns to action Tuesday for a single non-conference game at Texas Wesleyan. First pitch is 2 p.m.

GAME 1 - Trinity 7, UTD 4 (FRIDAY)
UTD had the tying run at the plate in the top of the 9th, but would drop a 7-4 decision in the series opener Friday night.

Trailing 6-0 after six innings, UTD plated four runs in the 7th after a pair of two-RBI singles by Cody Duplechin and Nick Marti. However, the host Tigers (now 3-2) plated an insurance run in the 8th to take a 7-4 advantage.

In the top of the 9th, Marti drew a one-out walk and Haden Johnson was hit by a pitch two batters later to give the Comets two runners on with two outs, but Trinity reliever Chris Tate recorded his fifth strikeout in his three-inning outing to end the threat.

Duplechin, Marti and lead-off hitter Jimmy Norris each finished 2-for-4 as the Comets matched Trinity in the hit column, 8-8. UTD drew eight walks off the three Tiger pitchers, but stranded 12 runners on base.

GAME 2 - Trinity 8, UTD 7 (SATURDAY)
The Comets opened the game with a lead-off home run by Jimmy Norris and used a four-run 3rd inning to pull ahead early on the host Tigers, 5-1. However, Trinity drew within a run after five frames and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th for the walk-off victory.

Tied 1-1 heading to the 3rd, Tim Cole gave the Comets back the lead with an RBI single to center, scoring Brandon George. Haden Johnson then used a bunt single to plate Marti and Mitch Barati singled in Cole to lift UTD to a 4-1 advantage. Josh Covey completed the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice bunt, scoring Johnson.

The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the 3rd to draw back within three runs, 5-2, but Cole picked up his second RBI of the game, singling in Marti with two outs in the 4th.

Trinity used a three-run home run by George Haaland with one out in the bottom of the 4th to cut the UTD lead to 6-5. The Comets scored their final run in the top of the 5th on a single by Norris, scoring Covey.

After a scoreless 6th, the Comets would strand two runners on base in the top of the 7th in an attempt to pull away from Trinity. The Tigers took advantage in the bottom of the frame with a two-out solo home run by Jeremy Wolf followed by three singles to earn the win.

GAME 3 - Trinity 11, UTD 4 (SATURDAY)
The Comets fell behind early, but took a 3-2 lead over Trinity in the 6th inning on a Nolan Smith double. However, the Tigers responded with five runs in the bottom of the 6th and four more in the 7th to pull away for an 11-4 victory.

Down 2-0 in the 5th, UTD got on the board with an RBI groundout by Norris, scoring Barati. Smith then came to the plate with one out in the 6th and runners on first and second for his go-ahead double to left centerfield. Trinity answered with nine runs over the two frames on seven hits and three Comet errors to complete the sweep. UTD added a late run when Smith doubled in Cole with no outs in the 8th.
