Baseball Back In Win Column After 4-1 Victory Over Texas Wesleyan

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX (02.25.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team returned to its home away from home - AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie - Thursday afternoon and chisseled out a 4-1 non-conference win over Texas Wesleyan University.

The Comets (now 4-3 on the season) broke a three-game skid with the win, riding the arm of starter Aaron Bach (1-1), who gave up just one unearned run in the win. UTD, on the other hand, took advantage of three unearned runs in the game, scoring twice on passed balls charged to the Texas Wesleyan (8-7) catcher.

Bach literally scattered seven hits, never allowing more than one in an inning. He opened the bottom of the 9th inning with his only strikeout of the game, but did not walk a batter. TWU's only run came in the 3rd when an infield error prolonged the inning for the Rams and they scored on a sacrifice fly that would have been the third out. Bach was also backed by some stellar defense. Centerfielder Josh Covey ended a 1st inning threat, running down a deep line drive for the third out. Then, with the go-ahead run on base in the 3rd, shortstop Jimmy Norris chased down a weak popup down the leftfield line and made a diving catch to end that inning for the Rams.

UTD took the first lead of the game in the 2nd, then broke open a 1-1 tie with single runs in the final three frames.

Corbin and designated hitter Nolan Smith led the way a pair of hits each. UTD was 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts in the game.

Smith started the scoring for the Comets in the 2nd, reaching on a solid single to left field, stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout. He came home with the first of the pivotal passed balls.

After TWU tied the score with an unearned run in the 3rd, both teams kept zeros on the board until the top of the 7th. David McKenzie opened with a four-pitch walk, stole second, then moved to third on another passed ball. With two down, Corbin beat out a tough roller to the first baseman and McKenzie came home to give the Comets the 2-1 lead.

Nick Marti made it 3-1 in the 8th, singling through the left side, stealing second and eventually scoring on another passed ball.

UTD then salted the win away with an insurance run in the 9th. Bobby Garner singled up the middle and advanced to third on a Corbin double to left center. Norris then pushed the ball to the first-base side, allowing Garner to come home.

The Comets have a rare weekend off before traveling to Austin College for a 7 pm game Tuesday night. UTD opens American Southwest Conference play and its home schedule with a three-game series March 4-5 at the UTD Baseball Field.
