Comet Women Edged By UMHB In Late-Season ASC Crossver Clash

BELTON, TX (02.04.16) - In a game between two teams battling for an extended season, the UT Dallas women's basketball team suffered a tough 60-55 road loss at Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference crossover play.

The Comets (now 12-8, 5-6 ASC) will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon when they host ASC newcomer Belhaven. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

UTD had early control of the game and secured a 31-22 lead at halftime after shooting 57.1 percent as a team over the first two periods. However, the Comets cooled off from the field in the second half, and the host Cru were able to fight their way back into the game.

A 23-10 third period put UMHB ahead, 45-41, but UTD tied up the contest, 47-47, with 7:15 to play, capping a 6-2 run with a three-pointer from Jasmine Lopez. However, UTD could not retake the lead as UMHB held the Comets without a field goal for over a three-minute stretch late in the game. A three-pointer by Kelsey Scibeck with four seconds on the clock broke the drought, but by then, it was too late.

Micaela Gonzalez led UTD with 14 points while Lopez added 13 points and Madison Steele finished with eight points. All three Comets collected a team-best six rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Comets did not lose any ground in the ASC East standings. With four games left in the regular season, UTD sits fifth in the division, a mere half-game behind both East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau. The Comets host both teams next week in an effort to lock down a berth into a 10th straight ASC Tournament.
