Comets Rally For Midweek Road Win Over Texas Wesleyan

FORT WORTH, TX (03.23.16) - Down 5-2 in the 7th inning, the UT Dallas baseball team scored five runs over the final three frames en route to a 7-5 non-conference road win over Texas Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore Park.

With the win, the Comets evened its season record at 9-9 and will look to move over .500 for the first time since the opening weekend of the season when they host Texas Lutheran in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday at the UTD Baseball Field.

The Comets trimmed the TWU lead to just two runs (5-3) in the 7th with an RBI single by Rodney Corbin;  and then used a two-run triple to deep centerfield by Nick Marti in the 8th to knot the game, 5-5.  Marti then came home with the game winner on a squeeze play that turned into an RBI bunt single by Josh Covey.

UTD added an insurance run in the 9th on a leadoff single from catcher Bobby Garner. His pinch-runner, Haden Johnson came home two hitters later on an errant throw by the TWU third baseman. Zach Bomer (1-0) and Brandon Koncaba pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the TWU 9th to pick up the save.

The Comets jumped out on top in the 1st with a Jimmy Norris single, stolen base and another throwing error on the TWU third baseman. The Rams (15-14) answered in the bottom of the frame, starting their inning with three straight hits. Starter Aaron Bach scattered four base hits over the next three innings, but his defense bailed him out with a pair of caught stealings and a pickoff at first base.

UTD tied the score at 2-2 in the 6th with a leadoff double from Tim Cole, who later scored on a wild pitch.. But the Rams chased Bach in the bottom of the 6th, scoring three more on three hits and a UTD error. The Comets then kept TWU from adding anything else on the board with double plays to end the 7th and 8th, leaving the door open for the rally.
