Box Score 2 RICHARDSON, TX (03.25.16) - Enjoying a bye week from its American Southwest Conference schedule, the UT Dallas baseball team returned to the diamond Friday for a non-conference home doubleheader with Texas Lutheran.
The Comets (now 10-10) dropped the first game of the day to visiting TLU, 4-3 in extra innings, before taking a 9-6 decision in the late game. UTD completes its four-game non-conference stretch Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. single game at Southwestern in Georgetown. The Comets then return to ASC play next weekend with a three-game series at Concordia Texas.
Game 1 - TLU 4, UTD 3 (8 inn.)The Comets held a 3-2 lead heading to the final, but Texas Lutheran rallied to force an extra frame before stealing a 4-3 win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
UTD opened the scoring in the 3rd with an RBI single by
Brandon George, scoring
Jimmy Norris from second base, but the guest Bulldogs countered with two runs in the top of the 4th to take a 2-1 advantage. The Comets answered in the bottom of the 4th, with a two-run single to center by
Mitch Barati, bringing home
Haden Johnson and
Cody Duplechin.
TLU took advantage of a Comet error in the top of the 7th and plated the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly. In the 8th, Keaton Bohrmann led of the inning with a a double and the Bulldogs brought him home with a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly for the winning tally.
Norris finished the game 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot while Johnson was 2-for-3. Comet starter
Brandon Lee did not factor in the decision after pitching 6.1 strong innings with two earned runs.
Game 2 - UTD 9, TLU 6With the first game of the day going extra innings, the second contest was reverted to seven innings as the Comets held off Texas Lutheran with a 9-6 victory to even their season record.
The Comets grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 3rd after collecting a run on a TLU balk and an RBI single by
Tim Cole and exploded for five runs in the 4th to pull ahead, 7-1. In the 4th, UTD used small ball to keep the runners moving, scoring two runs on sacrifice bunts and two more on bunt singles. Barati picked up his third RBI of the day with a double for UTD's second run of the inning and speedsters
Josh Covey and Norris each picked up RBI bunt singles.
However, TLU plated three runs in the 5th and two more in the 6th to climb back within a run, 7-6. The Comets iced the game with two final runs in the bottom of the 6th on RBI single by
David McKenzie and
Nick Marti.
Starter
Jonathan May (3-3) picked up the win as he scattered six hits through five innings with a pair of strikeouts while
Zach Bomer earned his first save of the season with a scoreless 7th. Norris was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a steal while McKenzie was 2-for-4. Norris now has 13 steals this season, giving him 73 swipes in his career, and is now just four stolen bases shy of the ASC career record.
