Comets Swept By Hardin-Simmons In ASC-Opening Series

RICHARDSON, TX (03.05.15) - After a tough 4-3 loss in Friday's series opener, the UT Dallas baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday to Hardin-Simmons to complete the Comets' first American Southwest Conference series of the season.

The Comets (now 5-6, 0-3 ASC) return to action to host the University of Dallas Tuesday, weather permitting, before visiting East Texas Baptist next weekend in another ASC series.

GAME 1 - HSU 4, UTD 3 (Friday)
The Comets belted out 11 hits but left a season-high 13 runners on base in a 4-3 loss to Hardin-Simmons Friday afternoon in the Comets' home and ASC opener.

UTD had a bases-loaded inning-ending double play in the 3rd and left the bases loaded in both the 4th and 5th frames as the Cowboys grabbed a 4-0 lead through five innings. UTD finally got on the board in the 7th with three runs on four hits, but left the tying and go-ahead run on base.

Down 4-0, Brandon George led off the 7th with his second walk of the game and moved to second base on a David McKenzie single, his third hit of the contest. Tim Cole then blasted a double off the left field wall to score George and move McKenzie to third base. Haden Johnson then cut the deficit to one run with a one-out single to right center, scoring both McKenzie and Cole.

Aaron Bach (2-2) tossed to the full nine innings, scattering six hits with four strikeouts. After a shaky first inning, giving a run, Bach settled down to retire 10 Cowboys in order before allowing HSU to plate three runs on four hits in the 5th. McKenzie was 3-for-5 while Cole and Johnson each had multi-hit games. The Comets had base runners in each of the first seven innings before going down in order in the final two frames.

GAME 2 - HSU 14, UTD 4 (Saturday)
Hardin-Simmons posted four runs in the 1st and two more in the 2nd to grab an early 6-0 lead and never looked back as the Cowboys opened Saturday's twin bill with a 14-4 win over the Comets.

UTD got on the board in the 3rd with McKenzie's first home run of the season, but the Cowboys answered with two runs in the top of the 4th to take an 8-1 advantage. The Comets got a run in the bottom of the 4th on a Mitch Barati RBI ground out, but again HSU responded, scoring five unearned runs in the top of the 6th to pull away. UTD plated two in the bottom of the 6th on a single by Covey.

GAME 3 - HSU 7, UTD 4 (Saturday)
The Comets rallied from behind twice only to watch HSU score three late runs to pull away for a 7-4 win in the series finale Saturday afternoon.

Down 3-0 in the 3rd, Johnson came home on a one-out walk and McKenzie plated a pair on a two-out bases-loaded single to left to knot the game, 3-3. The Cowboys regained a 4-3 lead in the 5th, but again UTD answered in the bottom of the frame as Jimmy Norris walked, stole both second and third and scored on a wild pitch. However, the Cowboys scored once in the 6th to go back on top and iced the win with a two-run 8th.
