Comets Drop ASC Series At LeTourneau After Taking Friday's Game

LONGVIEW, TX (03.05.16) - After an impressive 1-0 in Friday's series opener, the UT Dallas softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday at LeTourneau in a key American Southwest Conference series.

The Comets (now 10-7, 7-2 ASC) return to action next weekend with a three-game home series with Mary Hardin-Baylor. Weather permitting, the two teams will open the series Friday with a 4 p.m. single game before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Softball Field.

Game 1 - UTD 1, LETU 0 (Friday)
Sophomore Heather Gilbert knocked in Kendall Moore with one out in the top of the 7th as UTD continued its best-ever conference start with a 1-0 road win over LeTourneau to open a three-game weekend ASC series.

Junior right-hander Lauren McLeod (6-2) limited the YellowJackets to just five hits as she recorded her ASC-leading fifth shutout of the young season. McLeod stuck out four batters and did not allow a walk as she held LETU to just one hit over the final four innings.

After six scoreless frames by both teams, the Comets got their run-scoring inning going with a one-double by Moore, her second two-bagger of the game and team-leading fourth of the season. Gilbert then laced a single off LETU starter Kayla Cosby for the only run of the game. The YellowJackets threatened to rally in the bottom of the 7th, placing runners on second and third with just one out, but McLeod induced a pop up and ground out to end the contest.

Game 2 - LETU 5, UTD 3 (Saturday)
The Comets got in a 5-0 hole after four innings and could not rally back as UTD fell to the YellowJackets, 5-3, in the first game of Saturday's twin bill.

Down 5-0 in the 5th, UTD finally got on the scoreboard with an RBI single up the middle by Aly Hudec, scoring Melissa Livermore from second base. The Comets added another run in the 6th on a Heather Gilbert RBI single, scoring Stefanie Polderman, and a final run in the 7th on a Samantha Halliburton RBI ground out, scoring Livermore. The Comets brought the tying run to the plate in the 7th.

Game 3 - LETU 12, UTD 4 (5 inn.) (Saturday)
The Comets grabbed an early lead with single runs in both the 1st and second but host LETU exploded for 12 runs over the next three frames to complete the Saturday sweep and take the series, 2-1.

UTD opened the scoring in the 1st on a one-out bases-loaded ground ball by Sara Navarro that allowed Chelsea Sartor to come home. Livermore then doubled the Comets' lead to 2-0 in the 2nd on an RBI single, scoring Ravin Wilson from second base.

The YellowJackets then scored three runs in the 3rd and four in the 4th to grab a 7-2 lead before UTD plated two final runs in the top of the 5th on a Navarro double, scoring Livermore and Hudec. However, LETU closed out the contest with a five-run 5th.
