ABILENE, TX (04.15.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team split a pair of one-run games Friday afternoon as the Comets took a three-game American Southwest Conference series at McMurry, 2-1.
The Comets (now 19-13, 9-9 ASC) extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games with a 4-3 win in Friday's opener before falling to the War Hawks by the same score in the series finale. UTD earned a 4-1 win over McMurry Thursday night in the series opener. The Comets return to action Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference home game with Southwestern before hosting Sul Ross State for a three-game ASC series next weekend.
Game 1Â - UTD 4, McM 3
The Comets climbed over .500 in ASC play for the first time this season with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over McMurry to open Friday's doubleheader.
Mitch Barati was 3-for-3 including the go-ahead RBI single in the 6th inning after the host War Hawks evened the game with a run in the 5th. The Comets fell behind early, 2-0, in the opening frame after a McMurry home run but answered with two runs in the 3rd on a passed ball and an RBI groundout by
Tim Cole. UTD took a 3-2 lead in the 5th on a
Josh Covey sacrifice bunt, scoring
Ryan Burciaga.
Brandon Lee (4-2) recorded another strong outing as he gave up two earned runs on eight hits in a complete-game victory. Lee struck out five War Hawks and issued two walks. Burciaga was 2-for-3 while McKenzie was 2-of-4.
Game 2 - McM 4, UTD 3
The host War Hawks struck early with four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, but the Comets rallied and had the winning run at the plate in the 9th before suffering a 4-3 loss to wrap up the three-game set.
Down 4-0 after one inning of play, UTD got on the board in the 2nd with a
Cody Duplechin RBI ground out, bringing home
Haden Johnson. The Comets later plated a run in the 7th on a Johnson RBI single and climbed within a run in the 8th thanks to a McMurry error. Johnson gave the Comets their game-tying run at third base in the ninth after reaching on a one-out single to right, moving to second on a wild pitch and then stealing third. However, UTD would strand Johnson at third after a unproductive groundout and a strike out to end the contest.
Johnson finished the series finale 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored, an RBI and two steals while McKenzie was 2-for-4 with a double. Comet starter
Jonathan May made an early exit after giving up four runs on five hits in the first.
Jordan Murphy and
Zach Bomer combined for 7.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just two hits combined.
