RICHARDSON, TX (04.22.16) - After taking a big lead early, the UT Dallas baseball team was handed a 13-10 extra-inning defeat by Sul Ross State Friday afternoon to kick off a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.
The Comets (now 19-14, 9-10 ASC) will look to bounce back Saturday as they host the Lobos for a 12 p.m. doubleheader at the UTD Baseball Field. Prior to the start of the twin bill, senior members of the team will recognized in a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day.
UTD plated seven runs thanks to four Lobo errors in the 1st inning, but could not hold on the lead as SRSU scored three runs in each the 2nd and 3rd and eventually knotted the game, 8-8, in the 6th. The Comets regained a slim lead in the 7th, but again could not hold off the Lobos as SRSU forced extra innings and stole the game with three runs in the 10th.
In the 1st, the Comets needed just four hits to post a 7-0 lead they sent 11 batters to plate in the frame.
David McKenzie started the scoring with an RBI single to left, plating
Jimmy Norris, and
Nick Marti then brought home
Brandon George with an RBI ground out. Two batters later,
Ryan Burciaga scored McKenzie with a single to right. After adding a run on a two-out fielding error by the Lobos, the Comets extended their lead to 5-0 with a double by
Josh Covey, scoring Burciaga. With the bases loaded, the Comets scored their final two runs of the 1st on a ground ball by
Tim Cole that was booted by the Lobo second baseman and then thrown away, the third and fourth errors by SRSU in the frame.
The Lobos (now 16-18, 9-10 ASC) answered with three runs in each of the next two innings before the Comets stopped the bleeding with a solo home run by Covey, his second of the season, with one out in the 3rd, giving UTD an 8-6 lead. However, SRSU countered with a run in each the 5th and 6th to knot the game.
In the 7th, the Comets regained a one-run advantage, 9-8, when Covey beat out an infield single, advanced to second on the Lobos' third balk of the contest and scored on a single up the middle by Norris. But, SRSU answered with two runs in the top of the 9th to takes first lead of the contest, 10-9.
In the bottom of the 9th, the Comets would tie the game, 10-10, with a one-out single up the middle, bringing home pinch runner
Rodney Corbin from second base. But, UTD would leave the bases loaded in the frame as the Comets would play extra innings for just the second time this season. SRSU used three hits a walk and a hit batter to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Covey finished the 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI while collecting a double and a home run. Norris and McKenzie were each 3-for-5 as the Comets had 14 hits but matched a season-high 13 runners left on base.
