Comets Celebrate Senior Day With Win, Clinch ASC Playoff Berth

RICHARDSON, TX (04.16.16) - The UT Dallas softball team wrapped the home portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon with a 14-6, five-inning win over Ozarks to close out a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.

The Comets (now 19-18, 15-12 ASC) secured a third trip to the ASC Tournament in four seasons with Saturday's win as four members of the squad played in the final home game of their career. UTD will close out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Louisiana College. The two teams are slated to play 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday before closing the regular season with a 12 p.m. single game Saturday in Pineville, La.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 1st, UTD responded with four runs in each the 1st and 2nd as the Comets batted around in three of four innings in the victory. UTD added a run in the 3rd and five final runs in the 4th to complete the run-rule win.

In the 1st, the Comets used three hits, an Ozarks error and a pair of walks to take a 4-1 advantage. Melissa Livermore opened the Comets' half of the 1st with a bunt single, stole second and scored on single by Brittany Perkins followed by a fielding error by the Eagle left fielder. Sara Navarro then plated Taylor Ervin with an RBI ground out for the Comets' second run before Chelsea Sartor laced a single up the middle, scoring Perkins, to lift UTD to a 3-1 lead. After an Ozarks pitching change, UTD scored its final run of the inning on a Eagle wild pitch, allowing Sartor to come home.

UTD tacked on four more runs in the 2nd on just one hit as the Comets drew three walks and had another batter hit by a pitch in the frame. Livermore walked to open the 2nd and stole her second base of the afternoon before scoring on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Navarro. Perkins would later score on a wild pitch before Kendal Moore brought home Navarro with a bases-loaded ground out. UTD finished its scoring in the inning with a run on a two-out Eagle fielding error.

Up 8-2 coming to bat it in the 3rd, the Comets had their least productive inning of the game, scoring just one run. Ervin reached on another Eagle error, stole second and then scored from second base on a errant throw back to the pitcher by the Eagle catcher. But, Ozarks would plate four runs on five hits in the top of the 4th, to draw within three runs, 9-6.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Comets sealed the victory with five runs on just two hits as UTD drew three more walks and had two more batters hit by a pitch. The Comets scored their first run of the 5th when Livermore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing pinch runner Stefanie Polderman to score. One batter later, Ervin drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Moore. UTD then plated a pair of runs on a Eagle wild pitch to take a 13-6 advantage. The Comets completed the scoring with a two-out bloop single by Perkins, scoring Ervin.

Lauren McLeod (13-7) earned the victory as she tossed the complete game while giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk. Perkins finished the contest 3-for-4 with two runs scored as the only Comet to have a multi-hit game. UTD managed just six hits off of three Eagle pitchers, but drew a season-high nine walks and a tied a school record with four hit batters.
