RICHARDSON, TX (04.23.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team, in need of wins to solidify a position in the American Southwest Conference post-season tournament, came up empty twice more Saturday, falling to Sul Ross State, 5-3 and 12-2, to wrap up an ASC series.
UTD (now 19-16, 9-12 ASC) pounded out 30 hits in the series, but could not contain the bats of SRSU (now 18-18, 11-10 ASC), which finished the series with 39 hits and had the Comets playing catchup all weekend. The series sweep moved the Lobos ahead of UTD in the ASC standings, with just one more weekend of conference play to go. The Comets end the regular season with three games at LeTourneau next weekend, and can still clinch a spot in the ASC post-season with at least one victory.
Game 1 - SRSU, UTD 3
A three-run meltdown in the 3rd inning spelled doom for the Comets, who posted SRSU to a big lead early in the seven-inning opener and could not rally in a 5-3 loss.
With the score tied at 1-1 early, the Lobos charged out to a 4-1 lead in the 3rd off just one hit. Starter
Brandon Lee, who was otherwise effective the rest of the game, contributed to his own demise with two walks and a hit batter while his teammates were charged with an error and a passed ball. Lee (4-3) had five strikeouts in the complete game loss.
UTD took an early lead in the 1st when
Jimmy Norris reached on an error, stole second base, and eventually scored on a
David McKenzie squeeze bunt. SRSU answered immediately with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly in the 2nd to tie the score.
The Comets pulled to within 4-3 with a pair of runs in the 5th. Smith and Norris opened the inning with singles. After a sacrifice bunt, a
Brandon George single up the middle scored Smith and Norris scored from third on a wild pitch.
After a pair of three-up, three-down innings, the Lobos again got to Lee with another run in the top of the 7th after a single, double and RBI fielder's choice. UTD opened their half of the final inning with back-to-back singles, and had the tying run at the plate before SRSU got out of the jam with three straight fly balls.
Game 2 - SRSU 12, UTD 2
The Comets were handed their fourth consecutive loss as they dropped a 12-2 decision to Sul Ross State to wrap up the weekend set and the home portion of their schedule.
The visiting Lobos pounded out 18 hits, the most allowed by the UTD pitching staff this season, as they scored in seven of nine innings en route to the lop-sided victory. UTD finished with nine hits, but left seven runners on base.
Down 1-0 in the 1st, the Comets knotted the game in the bottom of the frame with a double off the wall by
Tim Cole, scoring Norris from second base. However, the Lobos answered with eight runs over the next five innings to secure a 9-2 advantage. UTD plated its second run of the contest in the bottom of the 6th on an infield single by
Ryan Burciaga, scoring McKenzie. SRSU finished the game with two runs in the 8th and a final tally in the 9th.
Cole, Burciaga and
Haden Johnson each finished 2-for-4 from the plate.
