Softball Rallies Past LC in 11 Innings For 1st Tourney Win Since '05

TYLER, TX (04.28.16) - The UT Dallas softball team rallied twice and picked up its first American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament win in 11 years Thursday, defeating Louisiana College, 6-5, in 11 innings to open tournament play.

Aly Hudec drove a walkoff single to center field with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to score both speedsters Taylor Ervin and Melissa Livermore with the tying and winning runs for UTD after the Comets had fallen behind in the top of the frame.

The Comets (23-18) will next meet tournament No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist in a game scheduled for 4 pm Thursday (though the tournament schedule is now well behind.) The 2016 Tournament is being played at UT-Tyler's Suddenlink Field.

After giving up a two-out RBI single in the top of the 11th to fall behind, 5-4, Ervin reached on a one-out  bloop single to left and Livermore followed by beating out a bunt. After a pair of stolen bases, Hudec drove the first pitch she saw from Savannah Settle into center to score both runs and wrap up the first 11-inning game in UTD history.

Livermore finished the game with three hits and a pair of stolen bases to continue her record-setting pace. UTD tallied six stolen bases in the game, surpassing an ASC season record with 120 and at least two games left on the schedule. In addition, Hudec, Brittany Perkins and Heather Gilbert all finished with multiple hits for the Comets.

The 11th-inning rally was actually the second for the Comets in the game as UTD fell behind, 4-0, before ever getting its offense on track against Settle, who went the distance along with UTD's Lauren McLeod.

The Wildcats (17-22) scored twice in the 1st inning off a pair of hits and a Comet error, then made it 3-0 in the 2nd with a solo home run. A controversial error on UTD shortstop Gilbert (which coaches claimed was runner interferrence) led to a fourth run after 3.5 innings.

Hudec was hit by a pitch to open the 4th and came around after Perkins and Sara Navarro delivered back-to-back hits to make it 4-1. The Comets then pulled to within a run in the 5th after Livermore reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a Ravin Wilson single and scored on a shot up the middle by Hudec. The Comets then tied the score at 4-4 in the 6th with singles from Stephanie Polderman and Heather Gilbert. Livermore dropped a blooper over the infield to bring Polderman home.

The Comets had a chance to win it in the 10th after a leadoff double from Perkins, but could not get her home.

McLeod went the distance to pick up her 16th win of the season, scattering just six hits and a single walk around seven strikeouts.
