Comets Find Offense in 6-0 Home Win Over Howard Payne

RICHARDSON, TX (09.17.16) - The UT Dallas women's soccer team entered Saturday's American Southwest Conference opener with Howard Payne with just three goals in four games. The Comets doubled that output in 90 minutes against HPU as UT Dallas earned a 6-0 home win to kick off league play.

The Comets (now 3-2, 1-0 ASC) needed just 27 minutes to equal their season goal total as three different UTD players tallied in the opening half for a 3-0 lead intermission. UTD added three more goals in the second half as the Comets finished the night out-shooting HPU, 32-1.

Sophomore Melissa Fulfer accounted for two goals and added an assist while junior Millie Atkins pitched in two goals. Sophomore Jessica Rusk scored in the first half and freshman Bailee Davis tallied in the second half.

Fulfer opened the scoring in the 10th minute when she received a cross from the right from teammate Jacquie Kaufman and laced a shot past the HPU keeper. Rusk then doubled the Comets' lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute as she corralled a loose ball after a Fulfer entry pass. Atkins' first goal came in the 27th minute after a free kick by Sofia Quezada.

Leading 3-0 at the break, Davis recorded her first collegiate goal in the 63rd minute, unassisted, finding a loose ball in the HPU box. Fulfer's second goal came just 18 seconds later after Kaufman made a run down the right line and found Fulfer in front of the goal. Atkins finished the game after a cross from the right by teammate Maegan Chavez.

The Comets ended the night with 32 shots, 18 on goal, with Rusk, Atkins adn Megan Mugavero each recording four shots each. Starting keeper Kristi Istre played the first half without facing a shot while Sarah Heady took over at half and faced just one shot by the Jackets, off frame.

UTD returns to action Thursday as the Comets host Concordia Texas in another ASC match. Game time is 5 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
