RICHARDSON, TX (09.27.16) - The No. 9-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team hit better than .300 for the fourth time this season as the Comets swept East Texas Baptist Tuesday night in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 13-1, 6-0 ASC) extended their winning streak to eight straight matches and have now on 24 consecutive ASC regular season contests, dating back to the 2014 season. UTD will take the weekend off before returning to action next Tuesday for a non-conference match at Austin College. Match time is 7 p.m. in Sherman.
Freshman setter
Caroline Shecterle continues to run the Comet offense to near perfection, finishing Tuesday's win over ETBU with 39 assists (13.0 per set) while adding a match-high 14 digs and an ace.
"The defense did a great job tonight getting the digs up and my hitters were making all the right calls," said Shecterle, who ranks second in the ASC in assists.
Senior middle blocker
Michelle Toro ended the victory with a match-high 13 kills while freshman
Dylan Brinkman added 12 kills and senior
Holyn Handley had nine kills. The Comets hit .302 on the night, committing just 13 errors for the entire contest.
The Comets controlled the match from the start, but gave up too many points to ETBU in first set which made it appear closer that it actually was. UTD hit .250 for the set, making eight errors, allowing the visiting Tigers to stay within striking distance before taking a 25-20 decision. UTD found its rhythm in the second set, hitting .419 as a team, as Toro and
Emma Wallbrown each had four kills in the stanza en route to a 25-12 rout. The Comets wrapped up the win with a 25-13 decision in the final set, hitting .273, with the trio of Toro, Brinkman and
Sydney Riordan each with three kills.
Toro led UTD with five blocks while Brinkman and
Fayna Zeng each collected three aces.
