RICHARDSON, TX (01.26.17) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team finished off a four-game homestand with its third straight win Thursday night, defeating Belhaven, 89-63, in a non-conference matchup of the future American Southwest Conference foe.
UTD (6-13) shot 48.5 percent from the floor, hit 19-of-26 free throws and won the rebounding war, 44-33, pulling away late after the Blazers (2-16) had cut the UTD lead down to single digits (48-39) with 14:16 remaining.
Freshman
Dimitrius Underwood had a career-high 24 points for his third straight game in double figures, adding five rebounds. He was 11-for-12 from the field, setting a new UTD single game shooting record at 91.7 percent shooting.
Kyle Coulter and and
Reagan Keogh combined for 19 rebounds as the Comets scored 23 second-chance points in the game. Defensively, UTD held Belhaven to just 39 percent shooting (23-of-59).
The Comets begin a four-game road trip Monday night at Ozarks.
After Belhaven tied the game at 3-3 2:40 into the game, UTD began pulling away and was up 37-26 heading into intermission. But the Blazers got a couple of quick layups to start the second half and cut the lead down to 37-30 just 1:14 in. Underwood then scored five of UTD's next seven points in a quick run to move the lead back into double figures (44-30) at 17:21. Belhaven chiseled the lead back down to 48-39 with 14:16 left, but UTD answered with a 6-0 run and the Blazers never got any closer than 11 points again.
