Comets Clinch ASC East Title With Home Sweep of LeTourneau

RICHARDSON, TX (10.24.17) - The UT Dallas volleyball team secured the American Southwest Conference East Division crown Tuesday night with a 3-0 home victory over LeTourneau to close out league play. The Comets cruised past LETU, 25-11, 25-11, 25-23, as they improved to 5-0 at home this season with five sweeps.

The Comets will now host the ASC Tournament for the third time the past four seasons and seventh time in program history, Nov. 2-4, at the UTD Activity Center. UTD will close the regular season this weekend with three non-conference matches at the Trinity Invitational in San Antonio.

Sophomore Kristyn Schott matched a three-set record with seven aces, six in the opening set, as the Comets finished the night with 11 aces in the short three-set victory over the YellowJackets. Schott got six service aces on a single serving run in the first set as the Comets rolled off 13-point run to take control of the stanza and grab a 23-10 advantage. Schott used three consecutive aces to open her service and got three kills from teammate Emma Wallbrown during the stretch.

After the dominant opening set which saw UTD record eight aces, the Comets hit .433 as a team in the set set en route to an identical 25-11 victory. The Comets would use two long services runs by Schott in the second set to pull away from LETU. After Schott's first service, UTD would take a 6-2 lead. Schott took the ball late in the set and served the final six points to lock down a 2-0 lead for the Comets.

The YellowJackets (10-19, 4-12 ASC) had their best performance of the night in the third set, hitting .194 as a team and nearly taking UTD to extra points. LETU led by as many as four points, 17-13, midway through the set. The Comets grabbed a 20-19 lead on a Lauren Schilling kill, but a pair of UTD errors gave the YellowJackets back a slim lead, 21-20. The two teams would tie three times down the stretch before UTD took the lead for good, 24-23, on a Sydney Riordan put-away. The match ended on an Alana Geymer kill.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Schott's seven aces matches the UTD three-set record set in 2015 by Kayla Jordan. The Comets' overall match record for aces is 10, set by Krissy Seaman back in 2007. UTD's 11 team aces were still seven shy of the program record of 18, set in 2007 as well.

The Comets finished the match hitting .270 as a team, finishing with just four blocks. Defensively, UTD limited the YellowJackets to a .058 team hitting percentage as LETU finished the match with just 22 kills (7.3 per set).

KEY PERFORMERS
Riordan led the Comets with 10 kills, hitting .375, while Wallbrown had eight kills and Schott and Schilling each contributed seven kills. Libero Briana Tully ended the night with a match-high 15 digs while setter Caroline Shecterle had 25 assists (8.3 per set).

NEXT MATCH
The Comets (19-8, 13-3 ASC) will open the Trinity Invitational Friday at 6 p.m. against host and No. 5-ranked Trinity. UTD will then square off with Schreiner (11 a.m.) and Texas Lutheran (1:30 p.m.) Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
