Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

In Battle of ASC Leaders, Comets Fall 2-1 In Double Overtime

BELTON, TX (10.07.17) - In a defensive struggle between two of the teams atop the American Southwest Conference women's soccer standings, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor slipped in the game-winning goal with just minutes left in a second overtime period Saturday for a 2-1 victory over UT Dallas.

After battling to a 1-1 tie through regulation, the Comets had the ball taken away in midfield.  A long pass from the Cru's Elissa Frebar was then chipped past a divivng Monica Dallacasa by Cattlyn Shaugnessy in the game's 107th minute to give UMHB the win.

The win left UMHB (10-1-1) just a half game back of ASC leader Hardin-Simmons with a 7-0-1 conference mark. The Comets (10-2-0, 6-1 ASC) slipped into a close third place with three weeks remaining in the regular season.

Applying constant ball presssure throughout, the Cru took control of the game in the second half on its way to an 18-8 shot differential. But the Comets, who trailed 1-0 at intermission, knotted the score with a Melissa Fulfer punch-in goal off a Keely Fillman assist on only their second shot of the second half with just 8:35 left.

Moments later, the Comets survived a last-minute scare in regulation when a Cru attacker got loose in front of the UTD goal, and rocketed a shot off the crossbar with just over a minute left.

KEY PERFORMERS: Dallacasa still made five saves for the Comets, including a couple of brilliant one-on-one stops late in regulation. Fulfer led UTD with three shots, putting two on goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for the Comets. UMHB entered the match on a five-game run, and had not given up a goal in its last six games.

UP NEXT: The Comets face arguably an even tougher test next Thursday when nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons visits Richardson. The match is set to begin at 5:00 pm.
